Outsole

The outsole of the Cloud X is one of the main strengths you need to consider. Made with a top design which can allow the movement in all directions, the shoes are among the most interesting solutions when it comes to quick runs in different locations. Even long runs with the shoes can be comfortable but the outsole can be truly versatile when running on different surfaces and when mixing training styles. With added rubber in the heel and in the forefoot, the outsole is also a durable design which will not interfere with the traction performance of the shoes for a few hundred miles.

Midsole

Featuring the distinct speed plate design, the shoes are recommended for runners who want to work less, especially on long runs. This is due to the fact that the plate comes with extra bounciness which can represent a great starting point when it comes to reduced leg effort. At the same time, this added plate design can be one of the main points to asses when you are recovering from an injury and when you are not entirely sure of your strength levels.

Upper

The distinct upper is made from breathable mesh materials. The main areas of breathability are also made with perforations. This allows the shoes to offer one of the distinct performance in different weather conditions. But the upper is also housing the added heel counter which can be of great use, especially when running uphill. With a perforated tongue design, the upper is also made for better heat control which can be responsible with extra moisture from sweating. Completed with flat lacing, the shoes represent a solid solution for those seeking improved comfort with the best lockdown. However, the lack of a midfoot cage doesn’t come with the tightest fit.

Updates

As one of the staple designs from On shoes, the Cloud X is a leading solution when it comes to premium materials and great innovation. In a market which can be saturated with similar designs, the shoes which come with rugged studs which tackle different surfaces can be a represent a much-needed solution for added versatility.

The shoes are a milestone for On as they represent a unique product in their category. While not all the technologies are new, the Cloud X offers the possibility to run on different surfaces which can mean that some runners might upgrade to the shoes for added liberty. At the same time, the running shoes are made with added attention to the heel area which can mean that the stability is at a high level and in a way, it needs to be, especially with the robust outsole design.

Size And Fit

Available in all sizes and colors for both men and women, the shoes fit well for most people. However, the midfoot area can feel large for some people. As the overlays are connected with the heel area, this could be potentially adjustable with the lacing. In case you are not able to secure the best fit, you can always go half a size down for better lockdown.

I wasn’t sure about the outsole design of the shoes at first. The first minutes felt different from my classic rubber outsole shoes. But after a few miles, the outsole just feels right, firm and bouncy. When picking up the pace, the shoes handled really well. Now in some situations, the lateral support felt like it could be improved. But apart from this issue, the breathable materials of the shoes made them quite comfortable. They are not as cushioned as other shoes, which allows them to stay lightweight. The stretchy tongue also makes them feel more like a sock than an actual shoe.

The shoes are great for versatility. With a lightweight profile, they can cover up to 12 miles per week with no impact on your feet. At the same time, I also use them in the gym, for regular workouts as they are quite comfortable. The reason I don’t push them on longer runs is the fact that the support in the forefoot is just not at the same level with the support in the heel. It is why you should also consider the benefits you can truly get from this lightweight shoe when running on hard surfaces.
